If the fiber is multimode, the ability to connect with devices running gigabit speeds will be limited by distance. Each device will list this distance in their spec sheet.
If the fiber is single mode, then your distances will be increased greatly. Again, refer to the spec sheet.

1) if the jumpers are yellow single mode, orange is multimode
2) if the spec on the cable says 9/125 it is single mode, 50/125 or 62.5/125 are multimode.
3) type the model numbers of the converter in google, then read the specs on the existing converters
How far apart are the buildings? What are the models of the existing converters?
SGFEB1013-120 would allow 550 meters for 50/125 multimode, 1800 feet
SGFEB1024-120 would allow 2000 meters for 62.5/125 multimode, 6500 feet
SGFEB1035-120 would allow 125 kilometers for 9/125 singlemode, 77 miles

I would sure read the sheath on the cable to be sure, but it sounds more and more like you are using 62.5 nm multimode fiber. I really recommend a pair of Transition Networks SGFEB1024-120 for that. They are pricey, $1800 USD each.
If it is 50 nm and you liked the DLinks, they make a DMC-700SC that will do gig for 550 meters. $280 USD each is more reasonable, but they would only go 220 meters on 62.5 nm fiber so be sure you have 50 nm.
