Fax connected to ATA

Many thanks in advance,I have a cust. that I do some wiring for, and I'm trying to help with this problem.They have a Compact ICS 4.0 system with there fax connected to the ATA on X237.The fax line also appears on there phones and it works good,just outcalling which they rarely do.
The problem is they lost all auto dial buttons on there phones over night and the fax only dials out like a hotline to there main office, you can not dial out manually but it does recieve faxes ok.The fax line is the 8th., in the system and they have 4 main lines for there business. in looking at there programming it was programmed as a hot line external which I removed now it doesn't auto dial, but I can't dial at all but I have system Dial tone.In looking at the station its shows that line 8 apprs. and rings for X237, also I can dial X237 directly and fax starts. To get fax to work I removed line from system and connected directly to fax till this is resolved. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated since I'm not knowledgable about Nortel products and again thank you.

Why do you even need the ATA in the first place? If the customer rarely uses line 8, and only uses it for outbound,just unplug the ATA, hook up the fax machine to the telco line and also connect the line back where it was on the CICS(line 28, not 8) and have that line just appear not ring on the phones. When someone faxes in or out that line on the phones will show that it is in use, and you still will have the fax machine hooked directly to that line, giving you access like a regular fax machine.

Incoming: Line being used must be ring only on fax DN, appear only on the sets you want access to the line.

Outbound: DN must be hotline, external, use designated line, dialing string should contain only a pause. You will then be able to just enter the number on the fax and press send, no other access code required.

Pats14 your setup will not show the fax line in use on the sets when used by the fax machine

Thanks Pat14 and Nortelnorstar I truly appreciate the help,any thoughts as to why this problem happened in the 1st place?
