Faulty Thumb Drive

Hi all, a friend has a thumb drive that was working, then intermittantly, then it stopped working altogether. No led, not being recognised by operating system. I know that this is probably a waste of time as it sounds like a hardware problem, but does anyone know of any software that might be able to gain access to the files?

Not if the device isn't being recognised.

I've had to deal with the same situation twice now and each time it was due to broken connections where the USB connector is soldered to the circuit board.

Each time I was able to get the contents off the drive by inserting the stick into the USB port then gently bending the USB stick upwards until the broken solder connections touched again, thus making the device recognised long enough for me to access it (although on one of the sticks I had to crack open the plastic outer casing, remove the circuit board and connect it that way).
