This is 3Com NetBuilder Remote Office router Model 227.

Fault lights are: amber Power/Fault light
status = lights 2 & 3 are lit.
load = lit (solid green)

The console shows primary boot file failed and secondary boot file failed. Do these LED's describe more than just boot failure?

Thanks.......tjamm

It looks like the router is unable to see the boot.68k file.
In this state connect via console, press the small switch (find it on the left hand side of the router-ethernet ports on left and wan on right), there's a small round recess. Use a non conductive tool and depress the switch. You will see a > prompt on your display.
Type cl - your given a menu for server, client address,
for each parameter assign necessary variables.
Make sure you are running your tftp/ftp server - configured for boot.68k file.
then type fl boot.68k
this will reload the image.
Then just reboot system.
You can do a network boot as well: instead of typing fl boot.68k - type the following
xd - extended diags
nb - network boot

it will start loading image.
Then you can copy over correct image using co command.
This is the best method to remove an unknown password - remove the system file.

Your first suggestion is pretty much what I ended up doing. It's up and running now.

Thanks for the reply.
