When doing a clean install of W2K, I'd like to switch to NTFS BUT ...
Will it mean my old DOS stuff will no longer run? (Vital stuff - Cookbook, Lemmings, etc)
Is NTFS totally transparent to other machines on a remote network (Citrix), to my CD drive, etc.?

Cheers,
Paul J.

You can load 2K onto a FAT32 drive if you are that concerned. If, later, you want to move to ntfs you can run;

convert drive_letter: /fs:ntfs from the command prompt and the drive will switch to ntfs. 1 way move though, can't go back.

NTFS drives are accessible to down-level clients accross the network.

Not sure of NTFS has an impact on older DOS programs.

NTFS has no bearing on DOS programs. It allows you to set security permissions on files and folders, but if you have Full Control rights then there will be no difference to FAT32.

However some DOS programs won't run under Win2000, regardless of the file system type. If I were you I would get another hard disk to play on - even an old 4Gb drive should be ample - and test everything you want to still use.

there is a compatibility program on the windows 2k pro cd, i'll let you find it, lol, anyways it's resource tools where you can make older programs run in a windows xp sort of compatibility mode for windows 95/nt/98/etc and diable temp folders and other stuff, carmageddon runs fine now for me ;)

Thanks a lot you guys. Now I have a vague idea of where I'm headed and where I'm going.

I didn't want to boot DOS but some of my stuff runs in a DOS window - or, rather, it used to.
Haven't been game to tell the boss that her Cookbook no longer works. (Pray for me!!!)

My old Lemmings runs in slooooow motion. It was fine in Win95, flickered a bit in 98 but in W2K now is unusable.

Lemmings Revolution, written for Windows, just says "No suitable 3D accelerator found." and stops.
Any ideas? I presume it is something to do with my graphics card which is just a 'normal' (is there any such thing?) card.
The card is an S3-Trio so I'll go hunt for any special driver but it seems to be working fine for everything else.

Is Lemmings running in a window? If so, that can cause it to be very slow. Try pushing ALT-Enter to get a full screen. You have to use the left ALT key. I think there's also a way to setup the shortcut so it will be full screen by default.

Tried forcing Full Screen - no luck. I might have to spend every day working! Thanks, anyway.

Paul J.

NTFS can read Fat and Dos but FAT cant read NTFS

tuco7 - bit of a meaningless statement! NTFS is a filestore type - it can't read anything. Same for FAT. Various operating systems can or can't read NTFS or FAT.
