We have an AMD K62/500 AT-form, VIA chip no-name board.
Drive is Fujitsu 10gb and has been fully tested to include full diagnostic and low level format.
We install Windows '98 SE and everything seems just fine. No errors during the installation of the O/S or anything else.
The PC is accidently shut down (power off) and when turned back on, Win.com or other files are reported missing.
When trying to restore the missing file or files, message says FAT (file allocation table)is corrupt.
This has happened three time now. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
P.S. No boot viruses present - this has been checked.

Windows 98 keeps 2 copies of the fat and if you are constantly getting fat table corruption it is either gonna be a harddrive issue or a memory issue.

Both memory (RAM) and the drive have been fully tested and given a clean bill of health.

Would you not consider an outdated or corrupt BIOS or I/O issue with the motherboard as a contributing factor?

One of the issues was with Windows98 shutdown. Since posting, we discovered the BIOS caused this failure to shutdown. A BIOS upgrade has cured the shutdown issue - perhaps this may cure the corrupt FAT after bad shut down as well. Thoughts?

Gonna have to say i have never seen a bios cause a problem like this....(losse a harddrive maybe) but not what you are describing( but there is a first time for everything) good luck and hope it fixed your problem
