FastRAD and Serial over Ethernet

I got a serial to ethernet adapter hooked up on my FastRAD and it's working great.

My vendor installed the Norstar Remote Tools on my desktop computer and I installed the software that simulates a serial port. Now I can reach back to the telecom closet for adds and changes and backing up the system without hauling out my laptop or putting my phone out of commision.

Only pain was with the Norstar Remote Tools not being programmed for XP computers with standard permissions.

I had seen a couple threads contemplating this solution, but no one had posted that they had done it...

In windows XP you can right click on an .EXE file and select run as option. Then you will be prompted for admin login and password. The software needs to be installed with admin permissions.

Aragon,

Thanks for the tip, but I've already configured Encrypted RunAS to take care of the permissions issues. (It just bugs me that programmers don't take permission issues into account when they write their programs...do they think that all the computers in the world are setup with full access?)

To All,

I forgot to mention that the device I selected is a Digi One SP...lots of devices do the serial-to-ethernet conversion, but I liked the form factor and instruction manuals.

This software that simulates the serial port for the Norstar NRU program does it come with the serial to ethernet adapter or is this a separate software package, if so what is the name of the software.
Thanks

The software comes with the serial-to-ethernet adapter. Each serial-to-ethernet adapter I researched has its own driver to simulate the serial port locally.

ok. ok... I got in too late. So how do I do an ethernet to serial adapter and which adapter do I buy. Thanks..

The adapter is just a box that has a serial port and an ethernet port. Plug the serial port into the FastRAD and the ethernet port into your network. Then install the serial port program on your computer and configure it to work with the software.

Dozens of companies make these things...think of all the banking, retail stores, and factories that have serial equipment and all these companies are promoting their adapters for upgrading them to a network solution.

A Google search for "ethernet serial" will pull up a dozen ads and plenty of websites. As I said, I selected a Digi One SP because of its form factors and instruction manuals.

I have only one site to manage, so I'm not sure if you can use this setup for multiple sites. Or at least for multiple sites that are not connected with routable networking.

Each adapter vendor has documentation on their website and some offer pre-sales assistance, so I'm sure that the answer is availble with a bit of research.

Sorry I can't say more, but I'm a bit swamped at the moment...

NARSBARS,

I just saw your post on the Xmas Wishlist.

This is not web access to a web interface. I'm using the Nortel Remote software to get into the MICS. The software does have a handy "Browse" function though that even impressed my vendor.

My post was about faster access to the Fast Rad using NRU.
IP is a lot quicker than dial up.
After talking to the vendor, I will order one for testing.
Have a great weekend.

I have setup this type of connection but would like to see if anyone has setup more than 9 sites?? It appears that the equipment that I used works off of a different COM PORT in NRU to dictate what IP address/site it accesses. The NRU only goes up to 9 different COM ports. So if anyone knows how to add more com ports to NRU or knows another work around, let me know.

Big Clem.

PhonesBrokeHuh,
Can't you tell the connection that it is using the same Com port or that each connection is a direct?
I am waiting because I have 76 Norstars currently.
