Hello there!

A lot of experienced folks around here, so let me try another problem on you... :)

When user is not logged in his phone, whoever tries to call that particular extension will get what seems to be called a "fast busy" (cisco term, I believe).

This is not a welcome outcome for my management, so I was asked to rectify the situation.

Can this be avoided? Play some sort of a message? Available redirection options are of no help...

You could create a Translation Pattern and redirect the call to a VMail box. If the users extensions are all in the 2000-2999 range, make the TP 2XXX and redirect in the TP to Vmail box with a Generic announcement. Then when the user logs in, the DN on the phone will be a more specific match and the call will be delivered there.
This could also be done with a CTI port and delivered to each individual mailbox if you wish. Put the same 2XXX on the CTI port and CFWD All to Vmail. The last 3 digits should 'fall through' to Vmail and grab the correct Mailbox. I haven't tried it but it should work.

you just need to configure the call forward not registered, no answer etc to VM -depending on the CCM Version you have

Thank you both for your input.

There's no VM functionality in place, so I'll have to implement it. All the better, I've always wondered how come we don't use it... :)

@pndscm: you've given me a lot of material to cover, i'll look into all your suggestions and make the best of it

@iptuser: I need to make an immediate distinction between calls made to logged users and those not logged in. as far as I can tell, cm4.1 doesn't have a "not registered" option in call forward functionality. As I stated in my original post, no call forward option available gives me access to handling such an event.

Not sure where you will "Play some sort of message' without a VM source. The Annunciator would be your only option and I don't know if you could put on a specialized message.

I'll look into this whole VM setup, it's about time my company starts using VM... i know a few people who are dead tired of taking messages. :)

Our users who log in are set up for the calls to either ring a group their colleagues belong in, or go to a phone with a static dn. Some have their calls go to an ATA with a bog standard TAM on one of its ports.

Just some thoughts...

Planetmaker, thank you for your input. BTW, are you Magrathean? :)

Most of our extensions also use hunt groups and incoming calls eventually end up getting picked up, but there are certain extensions that are never forwarded (higher managerial ranks). Calls to such extensions with users logged out result in "fast busy" signal that seems to be unacceptable. I'll therefore set up a VM and see whether that solves my problem. I just can't seem to find the time to do it right now. :(
