Hi to the group members,

With regards to the X Series 345.

I've recently been given this server as it was redundant, I thought it may come in handy for my hobby, so I've set it up as a home fileserver.

Everything is well but for the general noise of the fans.

Quite simply, Is it possible to reduce the noise level of the fans by some means ? Is there some utility that could possibly control the fan speed ?

I appreaciate that servers are not home PC's and that they generally belong in some datacenter, but would be a shame if I have to give it up though..

Thanks.

Speedfan is a utility that can control fans, but it is not recommended in servers. The server has a lot more sensors in it than a normal pc, and if it sees the fans slow down, it will start throwing errors, also the system will most likely become unstable, as those little fans need to spin pretty fast in that box to get the air flow it needs.

Hi,
Thanks for the tip about the Speedfan application.

It amazes me how much information you can pickup whilst looking for something else. I found out quite by chance that these servers have 8 fans installed that need to be running. If any one fan or more fail, then the rest will automatically speed up to compensate.

I removed the top panel to have a look inside, 3 fans are missing, so I guess there lies the problem.

Regards.
