Hi,
I just got a new fan (supplied with 3wires(black,red&yellow) and 3pin connector). My Mobo also has 3 pin power header. However, when I install the fan, it doesn't work at all. Does anybody have any idea of what's going on?

I removed the old one because it is too noisy. Note that it come with 2wires (black+red) and 3 pin connector as well, so apparently my Mobo was not designed to receive signal from installed fan. Do you think if that cause the problem? Or in another word, If I dismantle/cut SIGNAL wire (yellow) of new fan, will that make it work?

Any comment will be very appreciated....

Cheers,
KATON

Do you have the mother board manual? Try going to its web site to see what type fan it supports. All the fans I have installed have worked with no problem. You could have a defective fan! Do you have a DVM that you can check the fan.
Also look into the bios to see if there is diffrent settings for the fan.

Yes, indeed, I have checked the fan and it works in another MOBO...so this's absolutely not physically fan problem.

also, you can usually remove the wires with a pin
so you don't have to cut it. The third wire is usually for
rotation speed monitoring.

The two important wires "as far as running" are the red and black, just put the two plugs from the old and new fans side by side (key lugs the same way) and make sure the red and black on the new fan are in the same position, if not then it is usually fairly simple to change around the pins in the plug.
If you are convinced this fan works on another board I would suspect a motherboard fault but this does seem unlikely given what you have said.
Is the system booting but the fan won't turn? or is the system just momentarily coming on then stops?
Martin Replying helps further our knowledge, without comment leaves us wondering.

That is CPU fan and I don't think the MOBO is faulty, since I can still use the old one and it's running well. System is still booting, even without fan (but I can't let it for long period), but this fan just refused to move.

Do you think the third wire may have effect to the system?

Do what paparazi suggested. If your old fan didn't have the third wire then you don't need it. Remove it and wire it per paparazi's suggestion. Don't boot you system without the fan! You can burn up your cpu!! Jim

Please come back and let us know if your
problem is fixed and what fixed it!! [thumbsup2]

This doesn't make sense, if both fans work but the new one doesn't on your board then all it can be is pin orientation. Martin Replying helps further our knowledge, without comment leaves us wondering.

Yes, I have just finished my experiment..."That's all due to wrong pin orientation", or maybe unusual pin orientation of the MOBO. I changed around those 3 wires (come with 6 combination). And I found one of those worked nicely and in fact this fan is very quiet. So it was worth to make a bit effort. And thanks for all your suggestion guys...and Happy X-Mast from UK.
