After installing XP Service Pack 2 I went to the Microsoft site to download any additional updates. In the process Microsoft performs the “Genuine Windows Validation” and this PC fails

It has been determined that one time when this PC was returned to the manufacturer for repairs, they reloaded XP from an Image and apparently this is the key that the MS tool is recognizing rather than the key that the computer started life out having.

How can I correct this problem? I do have the original disk for this PC.

Thanks
Bennie

You could repair XP and enter the correct Product Key.

Repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows XP (Q315341)

Alternatively to having to redo all your updates you can have a look at these links.

Also speaking to Microsoft Support, particularly the Activation Problems section, they might be able to help you?

Linney's suggestion should work, but another option is to obtain an OEM XP disc w/ SP2 from the PC manufacturer. That would save you the hassle of having to slipstream SP2.

This approach works very well and is quick....best of all no repair reinstall of xp
as quoted from

KeyUpdateTool The Genuine Advantage Product Key Update Tool is only valid for users attempting to change their current non-genuine Product Key to a genuine COA sticker or genuine Product Key - all without a reinstall

And this tool verifys the product key installed

I use both programs and I am real happy with the results

your Product key should be on the case ....just change the number using the first program
then verify it using the second program

you can call the manufacture first to see if they will help you correct the product key that they screwed up...

or you can call Microsoft and ask for a new key if you can verify you have a valid microsoft xp cd.

you did not say if the cd was the manufacurer cd or an OEM xp cd?
if it is the first. call the manufacturer first

good luck
