Good afternoon,
I have inplace a PIX 515 currently running. Its running on OS version 6.0(1).

I recently acquired a second PIX 515 unit.
I want to:
1. Upgrade the firmware to the latest release 6.3.3
2. Install the second PIX as a failover device.

In what order should this be done?
Also would there be any issues with upgrading to the latest firmware. My main reason for the firwmare upgrade is the additional protection between layer 4 -7 (application aware).

Feedback is requested, thumbs up or down to 6.3.3.

Regards,
Vinay

HI.

As far as I know, only the pix 515 UR version can work in fail-over. If you have the restricted version then I think that you'll need to upgrade it.
Contact your Cisco dealer for details and your purchase opitons.

It is better in many factors then 6.0 and I do recommend to upgrade.

In order to run failover, both hardware and software must be identical and as Yizhar said you need one UR unit. You can find this information using the show version command.

Upgrading a Restricted PIX to a Unrestricted PIX is done by a simple licenses key. So, if you do have a Restricted box, you can upgrade it by typing in a new license key from Cisco.

Definately get 6.3(3). It's got OSPF and VLAN support! :)
