Hi All

Ok so, I'm getting a rather irritating error when trying to update the definitions on our McAfee Enterprise 7.0.0.

"Failed to initialize Common Updater subsystem. Make sure the McAfee Framework Service is running."

Now, I've Googled this and there appears to be a fix, going into dcomcnfg and changing the security setting in Framework Services to automatic.

Everywhere I've seen says this will fix the problem, however, it doesn't.

Now, I also read that the first version of XP-SP2 broke this, but the latest version of SP2 sorted it. So I tried to update SP2 by just getting the newest one from the microsoft website and of course, my machine was getting access issues and it wouldnt install.

The silly thing is, its not all the machines in the office that are having this problem, only some of them, but I cant figure out whats different between the machines that dont work and the machines that do.

Im going to go and try the whole SP2 idea on another machine, in the mean time, has anybody got any other ideas on how to fix this??? Cuz I'm fresh out of them.

hi,

you have an error 80070005@2?

if yes you have to manually clean registry.
I paste the instruction for version 8i, you can adapt it to your version.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

This is typically due to leftover legacy keys from a previous install. You will need to go through a manual uninstall and then reinstall the software. I have provided the manual removal instructions for vse 8.0i and 7.x. I need you to go through the one for vse 8.0i first then follow up with the one for 7.x and then once you reinstall you shouldn't have this issue any longer.

Manual removal of VirusScan Enterprise 8.0i

-Uninstallation of CMA/MAA-
Ideally, in order to decrement the reference count correctly for the Common Updater, first attempt to run the uninstall command for frameinst.exe. This executable location is found in the registry under the following key:
HKLM\Software\Network Associates\TVD\Framework
Find the "Uninstall Tool" value name, and run the executable in that value's data with the following command line option: "/Remove=Updater"
NOTE: Your Run line should end up looking similar to this, including the quotes:
"C:\Program Files\Network Associates\Common Framework\Frminst.exe" /Remove=Updater
Continue to run this command line option until the counter is properly decremented to zero, and the executable is no longer found, as it has been uninstalled.
NOTE: It is possible that ePolicy Orchestrator installed CMA.
If so, also use /Remove=Agent on the command line in order to decrement CMA's agent counter.
-Manual Registry Key Removal-
Delete the following keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Network Associates (Do NOT delete if there are other Network Associates products installed)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE \Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\McAfeeUpdaterUI
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE \Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\SHStatexe

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\AlertManager (Only if AMG is not on the system)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\McAfee Framework
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\McShield
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Network Associates Log Service
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\McTaskManager
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NaiAvFilter1
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NaiAvFilter101
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\EntDrvXX (May have number on end)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NaiAvTdi1

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Exchange\Client\Extensions
Delete the value: "Exchange Scan"

-Manual Directory Structure Removal-
Restart the system. Once it restarts, delete the following directories:
C:\Program Files\Network Associates (do NOT delete if there are other Network Associates products installed)
C:\Program files\Common files\Network Associates
%AllUsersProfileDirectory%Start Menu\Programs\Network Associates (This is for the Start menu shortcuts)

Remove the following files from %WinntSystem32Directory%
\EntAPI.DLL
\Drivers\NAIav4X.sys (WinNT4)
\Drivers\NAIav5X.sys (Win2K/XP)
\Drivers\Mvstdi4x.sys (WinNT4)
\Drivers\Mvstdi5x.sys (Win2K/XP)
-If the Lotus Notes Client was installed-
Remove these two lines from your NOTES.INI file, or from each Users copy of NOTES.INI. Note, if there are multiple entries in your NOTES.INI file then only remove the shown entry right of the equal sign.
AddInMenus=NCMenu
EXTMGR_ADDINS=NCExtMgr
