fading image into background 2

I've got an image that I want to partially cover so that it looks like it's fading in from the background of my page.
The nearest I've got is to either use airbrush and draw lines over it - doesn't look too professional, or to draw small rectangles over the image, colour them white & change the transparency for each - this isn't so bad but the lines between each box are visible.
I'm sure there's a way of doing this smoothly so the fade-in is gradual - does anyone know how to do this?

Hi. I saw that you aint got anny answers. neather have. my post i right under yours. I´ve tried too find out how too solve your problem but i cant, mayby there is a % button somewher so you can reduce the amount of color coverish. Sorry that i cant help you!! Can you help me maybe??

there is an opacity feature but it won't graduate, it's constant for an entire box, but shows the join between one smaller box and the next if i try to do them separately

heres how to do this....ready???

draw a rectange over your image and set the fill to linear...then in the properties panel at the bottom you will see that you have a linear gradient over your image going from say white to black, click on the little color square at the bottom so you can change the color and the opacity, once you have your palette open there are 4 boxes above and below the line of gradient, the bottom markers are for the color and top markers are for opacity, just change the top right one to 0% so then you will have a gradient going from white to invisible

I've got the linear fill but there doesn't seem to be a colour square that gives the options you mentioned. I'm in Fireworks 3 could this be why?
Theres a box saying transparent which I can either have a tick in or not - with the tick it's applied to the entire box.
But no boxes for colour & opacity - you meant in the 'fill' toolbar I take it?

o when you chose linear te gradient goes from one color to another.....near it (at least in MX and 4) at the bottom or on top where you can chose what type of gradient you want is your pallet selector for the gradient, if i have time to day ill take a screen shot and put it up so you can know what to look for

Is there a way to adjust the gradient opacity and choose "no color" for one of the gradient colors in Fireworks 4? Thanks, AMc Should I stay or should I go? Thanks & Goodbye, Joe.

no color? then its not a gradient...that would be the same as setting opacity to 0 [Hammer]

I finally figured out how to change the linear fill how deecee said.

In Fireworks 3 the pallete selector isn't where you choose what type of gradient/fill you want.

You get to this by choosing the main drop down menu at the top of the panel ( where the other options are to change the panel to stroke, effect etc).

When in the fill panel, this top drop down menu gives the option of edit gradient, which brings up a panel where you can customise the colours used, and generally play about with stuff(like deecee described).
