FACT or FICTION
We are about to move several departments consisting of anywhere from 7 to 40 phones at a time. I have heard different ideas on moving TN's. Does moving TN's from one shelf to another have any affect on the overall operation of the switch? FACT or FICTION???

If you mean the "MOV" command - just don't MOV ACD sets.

Run a TNB before you start, do a data dump before you start - save it off the PBX. Then perform your MOVs, then data dump on a separate backup.

that's how I would do it if I needed to be extra cautious

I've never done that many at once but I have never had a problem moving a regular phone TN here and there (Assuming you mean using the MOV command in the switch and not physically re-punching down wires).

I think the big no-no is moving ACD phones. Most prefer to out and rebuild them although not everyone agrees 100% with that. I generally leave my ACD sets alone or out and rebuild if they need to be moved. There may be extenuating circumstances that affect why or why not to do that with ACD sets.

With that few phones to move I would be tempted to re-jumper.

I have to say I agree with the re-jumpering - especially if it you have one of those walls (like I do) that you have been meaning to re-wire anyway because they get sloppy over time and need a good straightening up. This is a great excuse to do that and nobody whines about phone service being out because they knew it was coming anyway.

if you have multiple groups you should try to keep it balanced. You could end up with blockages if you have a big system.

I just did a 190 something desk move, If your doing it all by yourself, I personally would say do it in the switch, if you have some minions that are helping you, changing jumpers is quicker. A few guys on the floor with different toned toners and a guy or two at the cross connect panel, one one guy works with the other on the floor over walkie talkie, one tone for where the phone is, and one for where its going, swap the pairs. Our hard part is keeping all the phones plugged into their original socket while the guys are moving desks around, then get the closest phone thats on the floor on a desk, start the phone swapping madness!

Most places have it pretty easy with marked jacks mounted in the walls so you can actually plan a move, ours is all one open space with raised flooring. We have cat3 coming out of the floor everywhere with jacks all over the place, and when we move them we have to pull floor tiles and move them around with the phone cable and all, one day jack 3 4 and 5 may be here, but after the move its about 12 feet over at a different pod of desks, not fun....

Like GHTROUT said, i would swap pairs with all of the ACD phones first, get them out of the way, you don't want to swap them in the switch usually, unless your moving people between buildings or something where you cant swap pairs.

i run scripts here that mov 50 stations in a matter of minutes.. when depts change building they often move from one remote loop to another.. we wire the jacks on the new side to tn's, write a quick script and move day.. fire the script.. i've never had corruption problems doing that.. and no do not mov or chg an acd set

Thanx for all the responses. Guess I'll do as GH says and go from there. I'm not starting the MOV'S for another couple of weeks, if I have any problems by moving TN's I'll let you all know.
