My windows-98 machine was having problems with booting and would go into safe mode sometimes after it froze at the desktop. It then began freezing during the boot, but coming up properly in safe mode, every other time. I followed the trouble shooter and disabled my autoexec.bat and config.sys files. This got the machine to boot properly and the desktop and my apps are even running without freezing up.
Only problem is that the F8 Boot menu appears every time the machine starts and I either have to choose Normal mode which is the default, or wait for it to timeout at which point it selects Normal mode. Any ideas how to get the F8 boot menu to stop appearing on every boot?
Thanks in advance!

If you go get Tweak UI it will allow you to shut that feature off. OR........... You could edit the msdos.sys file. Here is a link to a page to show you how to do it. [sup]Tiger[/sup][sub]Flight[/sub] [tiger]

Run msconfig (start--run--msconfig) then click the advanced button and uncheck 'enable startup menu' then ok out and restart.

at a dos prompt
cd attrib -s -h -r msdos.sys
edit msdos.sys
delete the line BootMenu=1

Your advice has solved it!

line after edit should be
[alt] then [f] then "s" for save

the left bracket is an escape and an escape s causes the font to change.
Totally forgot that this little quirk was still here. Ed Fair
