I have a F40 that i need to reload software onto, I have pulled all the spare drives out of it and left 3 4-gig drives in it, I need to reload it with AIX version 4.3.3 but i cant seem to get the system to boot off the cdrom drive? I am from the HP-UX world and would appreciate any help that you could give.
Thank you in advance

I'm assuming you already have the OS on the system and are just doing a reinstallation. Type on the command line:

bootlist -m normal cd0 hdisk0 (or whatever disk the OS is on)
bootlist -m services cd0 hdisk0 (ditto)

Then type reboot with the CD in the CD drive. Because cd0 is first in the bootlist, the system should boot from there.

If you don't have an OS on the system, let us know and we'll give you the instructions for interrupting the boot. (You don't get a similar message you get on an HP.)

No i dont have an OS on the drives that are installed now. SO i really need the instructions.

Thanks for you help this is a little different than the HP-UX world...

Insert the CD. (You may have to do this after you power on the system if it is an internal CD drive.)
Power on the system.
While the system is booting, press F1 to invoke the GUI SMS (system management service) menu. (Press 1 if you an text terminal.)
You need to press F1 as soon as the keyboard is enabled. On a graphical screen, you see a keyboard icon. I'm not sure what you see on a text monitor.

From the SMS menu, you can select the boot device and follow the prompts on the screen.

You might want to go to search for sg24-5143-00 for the hardware handbook for the F40. There is a whole section on SMS.

Just to let you know, IBM's equivalent to sam is smit (GUI) or smitty and it is much better than sam.

Good luck. I hope I put enough info here. post back if I didn't.

1. Restart the system.
2. As soon as the first screen appears, press the F1 key (for GUI) or 1 for ASCII monitor.
You must press F1 or 1 before the last indicator appears.
The System Managment Services screen appears.

1. Select boot device.
-----------------------------
2. Restor Default Settings.
3. Exit

marvin51796,

One other thing: keep that redbooks URL. Doc for IBM is more plentiful and freer than HP's doc. (I started out on HP, but IBM can spoil you.)
