eyedropper

I have upgraded from 8 to 10. On 8 I could open a jpeg file
use my eydropper and collect the color from that jpeg to use on a new vector drawing. In 10 when I click on eyedropper and take it over any part of the jpeg I get zip,
nada!!! Is there a preference or guide I need to change?

Try embedding your image (links palette).

Works fine for me, but I'm working in CS.

Try double-clicking the eyedropper tool to bring up its options. Maybe there's something unchecked that's interfering with it? I've just tried using Illustrator 10 and it works on my copy, even with non-embedded images.
