Hello, I have a Windows 2003 Standard Server running as a member in a domain - about 20 users access the server via login scripts and mapped drives to alter/create files and the such. Every 2 weeks the server becomes very slow and doesnt response to RDP or remote control software, the only way we can fix is to reboot which also takes an age and then it seems to be ok for another 2 weeks. Can anyone suggest a method to resolve this problem....

check a few things like:

cpu usage

network loading (as it is slowing down)

processes check non required are not running

hard disk space for caching

kernal memorey good machines usual have a third of total being used as a guide, do you have to buy more memorey

Thanks for the quick reply:-

1.CPU is doing nothing 92% idle most of the time
2.Network is 10/100 fully switched and is new and correctly configured - plus only about 10 users on server at a time making tiny changes.
3.I have in the past checked the services and switched off all those not required.
4.Kernel I am not sure about, but the hardware is not very old.

I have subsequently found that logon is very very slow and I am investigating a post talking about JRE and APC being out of date.

Do you have any other suggestions ?

Check the event viewer for any errors.

If it doesn't leak oil it must be empty!!

Its strange they show nothing conculsive.. I will update this further once the reboot is complete - so please check back in about er an hour..lol..

do you feel slow when you are NOT logged on? i.e. transfer files in and out through network share.

slow logging on means some desktop programs (antivirus) or user specific processes that slow you down. You should check what software are installed and run as the login user.

Its a strange problem - I seem to open file shares at the normal speed and transfer at the normal speed. The server just seems to take an age to login and logoff. In the meantime the reboot has sorted the problem, I also followed some info about WMI and NIC cards - I guess I will have to see if that helps.....
