I am just now trying to learn some Cisco hardware/ IOS and have been given a 2514 (please don't laugh ;) I was wondering if there was any way possible to upgrade the IOS in the router via the console port. I have been able to connect via the console port, and the router is running v 12.0 right now, but I would just like to see if I could load 12.1 or 12.2 to actually learn on the most recent that this router can take. Thank you in advance for your time and attention. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again in advance.

akakingess,

Google is your friend for almost ANYTHING you want to do - Cisco links will normally be the top 3.

Your best bet is to get an Ethernet cable, you will need a tranceiver for the AUI Ethernet ports on that 2514 (Ebay) download one of the FREE TFTP softwares on your computer and follow the instructions below.

To get a 12.3 IOS you will need to max the DRAM at 16 and the FLASH at 16 - you can find good prices on DRAM and FLASH on Ebay or I always liked

Once again - GOOGLE what you are looking for and than ask questions about what you found!

Hope this helps!

I probably wasn't clear enough, I actually know (via google and cisco) that the 2514 will use only up to 12.2 and that I need to set up a tftp server to send it to the router, but I have been told by others that know more than me that it can not be done through the console port. I'm not going to go out and buy a cable to go to any of the other ports, just wanted to know if it could be done through the console port. I already am connected and communicating with the router, that's how I know that it currently only has 12.0. So, I guess the bottom line is, can it be done through the console port?

akakingess,

Once again using GOOGLE, seems the 2500's do not support loading the IOS through the console -

Did I say GOOGLE is a wonderful thing :)

Not sure what the big deal is for an Ethernet cable - about $2 and the AUI transeiver should set you back about $8 :) But then of course I own about 40 Cisco routers and at least 20 Cisco switches and take my Cisco study very seriously - but that is me, I would think nothing of dropping $10 to study Cisco :)

You said -
"I actually know (via google and cisco) that the 2514 will use only up to 12.2 "

Not sure where you saw it but GOOGLE Cisco 2514 12.3 IOS and you will see things like this -
"The best you can get is 12.3,
and pretty much all of those require that your DRAM and Flash is maxed
(16MB DRAM, 16MB Flash (2x8MB)). Futhermore, if your bootstrap is below
11(10c), then you cannot use AMD chipset flash modules, only Intel. "

Hope this helps!

I guess I may give up before trying, like I said I was just going to try to learn something new, I saw a table at Cisco.com that showed that on the 2514 I could go up to 12.2B29 or something like that, and I don't even know what you are referring to when you say AUI transceiver, so I guess I am out of my league, will start back over somewhere else and let this 2514 go back to being a doorstop at someone else's house. Thanks for your time and attention.

AUI port is old school ethernet. The transceiver is the adapter that converts it to an ethernet port so that you can plug a regular ethernet cable into it. You need one.

Don't give up---we ALL started just like you right now!

Thanks for the encouragement, I won't give up, just like the old saying goes "every journey begins with a single step", right?

akakingess,

Just like Burt said - take it one step at a time, don't give up over one little thing or $10, you will learn all the terms like AUI in time .......

I have been working with Cisco routers for about 12 years now, but I still remember that first router and all the questions I had and still have :) - it really NEVER ends :)

Here is a link to Cisco with all the docs you could want for that 2514 -

Have fun !!!
