Hi,

I was wondering if there is a utility that lets you extract mailboxes from an ofline backup of the Priv.edb file. Could I extract a certain users e-mail...and then import into exchange? I have heard of "exmerge"...will this do the trick?

Regards,

Julian

Exmerge will do the trick, get the latest edition, it is a wonderful tool.

Do be sure to get the latest edition. There is a new Exmerge2000 available. It will do the trick and is very easy to follow. You will want to do the two step exmerge. Export and then import.

I happen to have it zipped if you need it.

Hi,

I have gotten hold of Exmerge 3.71 (Recomended for Exchange 5.5). I have looked around the program and read some tutorial. It seems as if Exmerge is used for extracting data from a Store that is being used by the exchange server at present.

What I want to do is to extract one users entire mailbox (e-mail) from a priv.edb file which is the backup I created prior to the rebuilding of the exchange server. The priv.edb file that I want to extract from is on another server that is not being used by any exchange server. Is is merely an offline backup that I made.

Can I extract a users e-mail from this offline edb file or does Exmerge only work if it is extracting mail from a edb file that is live on an exchange server?
If exmerge requires a live store, how can I extract the mail that I need from an ofline backup?

Regards,

Julian

Exmerge will only work on a live server,
You will have to have your off-line backup running somewhere, somehow. Without recreating your production server on different hardware, you could shut down your production server, offline backup the existing databases (twice (just in case)) , restore the first backup, run isinteg -patch if required (read the MSKB article Q149238), Extract the mailbox then restore the production databases to the server.

Hi,

Thanks for the info. I want to avoid downtime for my users. Could I build another exchange server on a server and just patch the priv.edb backup to that store and then extract the users info to a pst file? Would this work or is there any conflicts that I may be missing?

Also, if I build another exch server, can I use the priv.edb file if I give the server a differnt made-up site and organization name.

Regards,

Julian

Hi Julian
Installing a new server as a recovery server is always an option and often a good idea to have one always available.
There is a couple of MSKB articles on this kind of problem

XADM: Limitations to a Public Information Store Restored to a Server with a Different Name (Q263055)
XADM: How to Move Exchange Server to a New Computer with the Same Name (Q155216)
XADM: Forklifting All Users to a New Server (Q199954)

These should help

Chris.

Hi Soonerland,

Please could you mail me the Exmerge2000 file...Will this work with extracting mail from an exchange 5.5 IS as well?

My e-mail address is Julian@spier.co.za

Thanks,

Julian
