Hi,

Right well here's a some what simpler question for people. I'm thinking about buying a new HDD for my PC, but already have 2 maxtor 120 GB hard drives and 2 optical drives, and so have no free space for any new devices. Being as I dont want to remove any of these devices, what would be the best solution to allow me to add my new hard drive and keep my other 4 IDE devices, other than using raid. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Buy a promise controller and add 4 more.

Give the wrong symptoms, get the wrong solutions.

I thought the promise controllers just sped up and improved reliability of your existing hard drives?

No - as Ed says, they allow you 4 extra IDE devices

You could get an external storage bay that you put the hard drive in and connect it via USB, cheaper then buying a USB drive.

Myself I have a promise Ultra 133 Tx2 card and love it
I have a cd writer, dvd drive and 5 hdd's installed and one removeable hdd tray for when I need to access a customers hdd to check for problems
With the MB bios I have to choice to boot from either the promise card ( boot from SCSI Device )or the IDE on the MB
It's funny how many people do not realize that you can have more then 4 IDE devices hooked into a MB if you know what your doing

Thanksfor the input guys and gals. I just bought a really nice thermaltake v6000a case so I've got plenty of room for expansion so I'm thinking the promise Ultra 133 Tx2 card sounds like a pretty good idea.
