What exactly do I need to do to add an extra global catalogue server?

Go to your AD, Sites and Services. Find your site, then go to Servers, select the server that you want to make a GC, highlight it's NTDS Settings, right click for Properties, and check the Global Catalog box.

I ran into the same issue just a few weeks ago.

Rememeber, it will increase your network traffic briefly as the catalog is replicated to the new server. Depending upon your network, this could slow ya down a bit.

Advice: 1xGC /site(subnet). Gia Betiu

The replication traffic will be substantial if you have more GCs. Imagine that you have more domains too. A GC will have the informaion from al of them. Gia Betiu

Ok, copy that but two GC's should not be be too much traffic...

How many users/objects in your AD?

I've seen only negligble increase in traffic due to the replication since adding a 2nd GC to my domain. I have about 100 users, plus another 60 with Exchange, and about 30 shares between my two file servers. Not a problem to date.
