Extra borders rendering in Excel

We are in the process of upgrading from 2000 to 20005 at long last.

I've noticed that in 20005 reports rendered in Excel get a lot of extra borders around cells that aren't in the report, and they are thicker. Whereas in 2000 the Execel renderer always gives the same borders as defined in the report.

Any ideas what on what is happening? Any suggestions on how to get the same results as we get from 2000?

csv isn't formatted.

The excel reports need to be formatted exactly the same as viewed through reporting services. No extra borders, no missing borders.

Do you have any report items either above or below the table in your report? If so, that's probably the cause of the merged cells.

The Excel rendering extension will merge cells throughout the worksheet in order to preserve the defined report layout. Most often, this happens when there is a textbox above the table that functions as a header. If the boundary of the textbox ends in the middle of a table cell, cells will need to be merged.

Try to ensure that the left or right edges of the report item line up with table columns in order to minimize cell merging.

The formatting of some of my reports are quite complex, true.

However Reporting Services 2000 exports them to Excel prefectly, so the question is why doesn't Reporting Services 2005 export them perfectly?

As a test I've just created a simple report in 2005 with 1 table, nothing else, and a thin 1pt border around each cell, nothing else.

When I export to Excel I get a thick 2pt border around each cell.
