I've had a bad run of luck with external hard drives. They tend to stop working at only the most inconvenient times. I've just moved and although it was packed securely, it was likely jarred around a bit and was exposed to higher than normal temperatures (outside on a hot day in an enclosed box). After plugging it back in and turning it on, it's now emitting a high pitched screetching sound. It's not loud, but past experience tells me that it's on its way out. Does anyone know what might be causing this or what I can do about it (short of procuring a replacement)?

External Seagate emitting a high pitch screech/squeal

Yes, I have lost a few machines due to movers' clumsiness. There is no repair option, the closest would be SpinRite but it costs almost as much as a new 300GB+ drive and will not fix a bad bearing or bent spindle. Take this opportunity to get the data off the drive while it still works, then replace it .

Any noises like this are due to mechanical problems. get your data off fast as this will either seize up, (bearings), or sustain a head crash, (if it hasn't already).
