I have a situation were I only have 1 pair available in an area for the use of an 18D. I must put an 18D in that location. It will be to costly to install additional pairs.

Can I externally power the 18D with a 48V power supply instead of replying on power from the PROC? If so how would this be done?

No, because the 2nd pair is not just power, but the data that controls the buttons and display.

In that case your only choice maybe a single line set.

i wanted to use a partner 18d instead of a nortel 7316 beacuse the set is back lit. this is in a guard shack that will be dark most of the time. any suggestions?

Have you considered a cordless handset? Depending on how far the guard shack is from the main processor, it might be a good alternative.

They need the CID info. that they 18D would give them.

The Partner ACS R8 processor will pass Caller ID information to single line telephone sets.

Short of that, the only alternative I can think of that has any chance of working would be the Transtalk 9040 cordless telephone (assuming that distance isn't an issue and that you can locate 2 free wire pairs somewhere in the main building in close proximity to the guard shack).

If it ain't broke, I haven't fixed it yet.

if your going to go cordless I would be looking at the engenius durphon 1x

Well they are about 300 feet from the mai building. The issue with cordless ina guard house is that they tend to drop the cordless handsets and damage them a lot that is why i wanted desk or wall mounted sets.

If you go with the processor upgrade to an R8, another corded option might be to couple a Fanstel G99M Caller ID adjunct with an Avaya 6221 telephone.

The Fanstel's display is backlit and the Avaya 6221's voicemail LED will work with any Avaya based voicemail that may be in use.

Fanstel G99M:

Avaya 6221:

If it ain't broke, I haven't fixed it yet.

Thanks.

Will there be an upgrade to the voice mail platform since there was an upgrade to the PROC to R8.

BTW what advantages are there in the R8 upgrade?

Being an end user, I don't have access to Avaya's product announcements. I haven't heard any rumblings about an update to the Avaya Partner Messaging. So the R7 voicemail is the latest & greatest full sized offering for the Partner ACS.

The R8 processor does add some features to those offered by the R7.

Check this out:

But the upshot to all that has been said is that with only 1 pair of wires in the guard shack, you will not be able to use a corded Avaya system telephone because they require 2 pairs to operate.

If it ain't broke, I haven't fixed it yet.
