I have exchange 5.5 on my NT4 server box with the delivery options on
certain mailboxes setup so that email is redirected to an alternative
recipients.
This has worked fine for some considerable amount of time, but lately
users have complained to say that only internal emails are being
redirected to their alternative recipient web address, whereas they
were able to receive external emails too.

If I try and send an email from my hotmail account the user in
question recieves it fine, but it is not redirected to his AOL
Account.

If I try and send an internal email to the user, the email is also
redirected to his AOL account fine.

I know for certain it is not an AOL problem because other users that
have a Hotmail alternative recipent address also experience the same
problem.

Any ideas what might be causing this? and why just external emails?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

This is because of default option which remain checked when exchange is installed.

Try to do this,i thing it will solve your problem.

Open up the IMS Properties page.you will find it in configurations/connections container in exchange admin.
Click on the Internet Mail Tab.
Click on Advanced Options.
Uncheck the "Disable Automatic Replies to the Internet."
