external HDD crash

I bought a new 500Gb Seagate external hard drive. It worked fine for a couple of months. One day, it suddenly made loud noises. I immediately shut down my computer.

Then, I restarted my computer and reconnected the hard drive. I can hear the spinning of the hard drive really loudly, which is usually quiet. After a few seconds, the noise stopped, but the light is still on, and it is not connected to my computer.

What can I do? I'm thinking of replacing the drive into a new enclosure, hoping that the problem is with the Seagate enclosure. Data Recovery from Seagate is going to cost a fortune, literally.

Can anybody help? Any suggestions? Thanks
 
Can you see the drive either in BIOS or My Computer? The loud noises are not a good sign. If you can see it, run chkdsk on it Start-->Run-->chkdsk X:/r where "X" is the drive letter of the drive. I've heard of it taking hours, then magically returning the drive to working condition. If you can see the drive, start copying data off of it as you don't know how long you'll have.

I would start by removing it from the enclosure, and connecting it directly to the computer.

If it is recognized in BIOS firstly then its a good sign.

Let it boot it Windows and see if it can find it in explorer, if it can and you can read it, then its most likely a problem with the enclosure and not the drive itself.

If its not in Explorer: Then from windows go into Disk Management.(Right Click on My Computer, and select Manage, then go down to Storage).

Can you see the drive there?

If its there then its still functional enough to get recognized by Windows, but not enough to give it a drive letter.

Yo could try a Data recovery app like GetDataBack see if it can recover some info.

I tried it on another computer, it didn't work either. So the problem is with the drive, just not sure if it's the drive or enclosure.

I cant see the drive anywhere, basically its not working I suppose. I opened the enclosure, but the problem is I have a laptop, thus I need USB.

The HDD is connected to the enclosure which I believe has an adapter that change SATA (or what it is) to USB. I think I may need to try another enclosure to find out if its the HDD or the enclosure that's broken.

Problem is, how do I connect it directly to laptop? It would be easier with desktop.

Any suggestion as to how I should proceed from here? Thanks

 
You would need a desktop to try the method I described.

So basically you are down to getting a desktop to try it in, or another enclosure to test.

Do you know someone who might lend you their desktop for the procedure?

Its just a simple matter of plugging it into an available SATA port if the internal drive is indeed a SATA drive.

Noisy Seagate? Bearings are gone. Common problem with them. Backup all the files and RMA the drive. I don't suggest running checkdsk on suck drives as you may encounter more problems.
