This may be a silly question... however, I need to ask it anyway.

Is it possible to use an external hard drive as the only hard drive for a machine? I have a computer that does not have an internal drive and I want to use an external drive to load a OS, software, etc. Can this be done using an external device exclusively?

Thank you...

Possibly. I have never tried it, but it should work. Is this a USB drive? If so you need to be able to boot from USB.

It will be a USB drive. If the BIOS doesn't support booting from a USB device I suppose that it will not work. Is that correct?

Yep, You need the BIOS to be able to boot from USB for this too work. Do you know if your BIOS supports USB booting?

I am not sure about the BIOS. I think that I will just get an internal drive and go from there. Thanks for your reply...
