hi ive just bought a 80gb samsung external hard drive the problem is this:

after installing the drivers and formatting the drive when i reboot my pc slows right down and i wont function properly until i unplug the external hard drive, my computer also keeps changing the drive letter assigned to the external drive. Would lack of space left on my internal hard drive affect the way the new drive functions i have a 30gb internal drive with around 168mb of space left.

im running O/S 98se

processoe 1.3ghz

256 sdram

any help would be greatly appreciated

thanx...

The lack of space is most likely what is causing the slow down.
Catch 22, you're running out of space so you buy a new drive. Now you need some extra space to access the new drive so that you can free up space!!

What about deleting your temporary internet files from Internet Explorer, they can take up a lot of space!

cheers what im gonna do is backup what i need do a format and install everything from scratch.. I'll let you know how i get on..

thanx...

ok i formatted and the drive still slows my computer down i noticed that it only happens after i have installed the drivers for it im desperate for any help thanx...

So you re-formatted your 30GB 98 drive and now have lots of space on there. Added the correct 98 drivers, and it still slows down when you have the 80GB external drive plugged in?

The only thing I can think of then is a driver problem, are you sure you have the latest 98 drivers? Are there any updates available?

just checked and i have all the latest drivers for my hardware..

I cant think of anything else i can do to get this drive running properly...

OK, Assuming the drive is connected via USB, is it a USB 2.0 standard and does your computer support USB 2.0 or is your pc USB 1.1?

How long did you leave it before you unplugged the drive?
Is it worth contacting Samsung through their website?

I must admit, I'm scratching my head here too.

yes the drive is USB 2.0 but the drive is backwards compatible with 1.1, i'll have a look to see if i can find anything on the Samsung website...

I left it a good 10 minutes before i unplugged the drive..

thanx for your help really appreciated..
