Hi

I have been using a 160GB hard drive to store all my data. A couple of months ago it began making a loud whirring noise when started up, which ceased after about five minutes. This week, the noise has been taking an hour to cease. Last night, when trying to use the drive an error message came up saying it was unreadable and corrupted.

I have tried running chkdsk but the window simply says 'the type of the file system is NTFS' and then closes down.

Foolishly although I got the CDs out to back up the drive this week I didnt do it.

I have looked back at some past posts but as I have a low level of knowledge, I dont understand many of them.

There are so many hours of work on there I would be grateful if anyone could offer any advice.

Hello,
Your drive is definitely failed.Your mistake was that you were trying to run damaged disk. Chkdsk might corrupt the file system. If your data is important, you better to ask data recovery professional. I recommend
