External Email

Firstly Apologies (accidently posted this in the 2003 Server forum first).

We've just setup a new Exchange 2003 Enterprise Server in our existing Organisation.

The purpose of this mailserver is to serve as an interface with other applications.

Before has even been attempted, Exchange 2003 Enterprise has been installed, and SP2'd.

We have one test mailbox on there at the moment, and has no issues sending or recieving INTERNAL MAIL.

However, if someone sends us an email from an external address, then we do not recieve it until an external email is SENT.

If we move the mailbox to another exchange server, its fine, everything works.

Just wondered if anyone else had encountered this, or any other ideas.

What's the details on the other Exchange servers in the org and why can't you use those for your other apps instead of a new one?

We have 2 virtual servers in a cluster environment, another using IIFP and this new one.

All are running Exchange 2003 SP2.
When installing Exchange, we naturally told it to join the existing organisation, so all in all the settings should be the same across the board.

The only difference is this new server is NOT SAN Attached, and has the database on a local drive.

Reason behind it being a new server is that we dont want it to have any adverse affect on our existing mail servers. This is to be a hybrid, if you like, to allow interfacing between bespoke systems.

Turned out an entry was required in the HOSTS file on the 2003 Exchange server to help with the mail routing to/from Exchange 5.5.

Once I had added the Exchange 5.5 servers in, it worked perfectly.

Hosts file? Surely DNS should be taking care of that?
