I need to extend T1 service from Demarc to Telecom room\Patch panel.

They installed 1 (25) pair from basement demarc to a network closet on a 5th floor. Both ends are termed on 66 blocks. I think have a good idea on how to extend this service, but would like some veteran suggestions, tips, pics, etc.

Heres my thoughts:

* From demarc 66 block(25pr.feeder to network closet), terminate catagory 5e cable to surface mounted modular jack, with 568b pin-out.Install cat5e,568b straight-through patch cable from jack to specified T1 service port.

* From network closet 66 block (25pr. feeder to basement),terminate catagory 5e cable to surface mounted modular jack, with 568b pin-out. Install catagory 5e, 568b straight-through patch cable. It appears this cable will end up being terminated on the back of a network patch panel.

What do you think? Thanks.

you can extend all you want with the demarc cabling to any IDF with ordinary cat3 grade cable or 25 pair....just make sure the length off that feed is a within cat5e standard and use cat5e cable to the T1 circuit. i'm in canada, everything here is either bix or 110. hate 66 personally....but have to work on those once in a while....=)

I guess in a nut shell the grey area for me is coming off the blocks to the T1 equipment.

no sweat....off the block take either 1 or 2 pair (depends on your carrier..) off the cat5e and terminate on the block, crimp the other end RJ-45 go straight into the circuit....

Yeah there not giving me much info on the carrier.

They also insisted on mounting the modular jack from the block and patching in to the circuit.Whatever...I much rather crimp it as you stated.

they are supposed to install the circuit for you and run any cables if require. bell canada here always have tech to run any cables if the demarc is not within the customer's premise but the circuit has to be so they have no choice but to run the cable for you. either way is not as difficult T1 usually uses 2 pair and on the RJ-45 is pin 1,2 and 7,8...i might be wrong so look it up =)

Is there really a standard for Cat5e when it comes to T1's? I know the standard for data but did not know that the 295 meters applied to voice???? 1/2 and 7/8 and 1/2 and 4/5 are the other pinouts. I really dont even think you need Cat5e at all, you can run it on Cat3--or if the blocks are close enough, run cross connect from the T1 providers block to the 66 block feed to the fifth floor, then cross connect from the 5th floor 66 block to your suites 66 block, if there is one, or just run a Cat3, Cat5 or Cat5e cable from the 5th floor block to your telco room and terminate it accordingly---on a 66 block or with an RJ45 if you are plugging it directly into equipment.

Thanks guys!

We just prefer to use Cat5e over Cat3.

Absolutely no reason to use category 5e cabling... considering that the telephone company's plant that delivers the T1 circuit to your facility is going to be Category 3 cable AT BEST, and most likely is not, and in some cases can even still be 26 guage cable.

Granted, most carriers do prefer to see their own feed cable... but it doesn't really make a difference, and also... distance requirements do not apply within reason.

I have extended many a smartjack. On long runs when the equipment didn't sync, the provider just opened the smartjack and turned up the voltage. Use an RJ31x (? check me guys) to loopback the sig if equipment will be disconnected for any lengths of time.

Why is there never a phone in the phone closet?

Why is there never a phone in the phone closet?

T1's use an RJ48X
Alarms use RJ31X

due to different pinouts

We extend our using a Cat 3 shielded 2 pair cable and have not had any problems. You can punch straight down from the RJ-21x or in my case crimp a plug on it and plug it into the fiber mux. Then punch it down on the RJ-48 jack and it's a done deal.

mikeydidit is correct the correct way to extend a t-1 cable is to use shielded wire grounded on one side and a RJ48X jack so it will go into loopback if the patchcord is removed if extending it on house cable there is supposed to be at least 25 pairs between the two pairs (not on the same 25 pair

Maybe I got confused somewhere, but here is my input on T1 :

On the input side, from the Telco Dmark to the magic box, is usually Cat3, mine is all 2 pair.....extending is no issue, I have 3 sharing a 25 pair Cat3 run about 30 ft across a Comm room.

If your dealing with the output of the magic box, Ive used Cat5 with no problems, but these have all been short cable runs ( less than 25 ft ).

Some swear that you must have the shielded stuff, but mine is not and has not had issues, even around the elevator controller, radio equipment, and everything else that can be rammed into my room!
