hi all

i hav a control workstation running aix 4.3.2,
it contains two 2.2 gb hdisks, to create some extra space ihav added one 18 gb exeternal disk to it. i need the space to create the system images of my sp nodes on the control workstation (/spdata).

now i want to use that free 18 gb space for creating system images .... i.e . on /spdata filesystem.

Is there any tool to migrate the logical volume from one pv to other like we hav "migratepv" which migrates whole pv .

what i am planning is
1.make a copy of lv /spdata on exetrnal disk.
2.delet the copy of spdata from the internal disks.
3.extend the lv spdata
4.create the images on it.

is this going to serve my purpose??
please guide me...

thanks

Hi Nandakumar !

As far as my understanding goes , i have used the migratepv
command to migrate(ie ..move;u neednot remove the oldcopy) the logical volumes in a PV to another PV

migratepv [-l logicalvolume] sourcePV destPV

But before doing that , i had to make the new PV part of the same volumegroup ,this was the only requirement. So your steps look fine to me , but allways do take a mksysb backup of the system and a backup of the LV before doing this. All the best to u!

hi rajesh

When i read the man pages for migratepv comand, it says that u can migrate ur lv from one pv to many or from one to one.

but in my case my fs is residing on two pvs (hdisk0 & hdisk1). so i am not sure how to use it.

i am not able to find any solution. and i hav to do this immd. as i dont hav any system images.
please help me.

thanks

Nan,

Do them one disk at a time first hdisk0 - hdisk2 then hdisk1 - hdisk2.

i.e.

migratepv -l lvname hdisk0 hdisk2

migratepv -l lvname hdisk1 hdisk2

Now all parititions are on hdisk2.....

You can then run a reorgvg to tidy up.

Of course the disk will have to be part of the same VG for migratepv to work. This means that to add the 18.2 gig disk to the vg you will have to change the max. number of PP's per PV from 1016 by a factor of maybe 3-5 depending on your PP size. You need to be at AIX 4.3.0 for this functionality.

check out:

chvg -t

It may be easier doing an on line copy via backup/restore of course when no one is on the system. I think that I went through this with you before.

Hope that helps

nan,

Thge reorgvg is only if the JFS is not in contiguous partitions on the disk - I would not worry about it you selected 2 X source disks before the migrate.

Glad that it worked.
