Extending a Expansion Module several feet away 9

We have a new building that has been added right next door and the phone closet where the IP Office is located is probably about 200 feet away. We use 9508 digital sets. Is it possible to extend the signal to a Digital Expansion 30 module so that it will still connect to the control unit? I believe that the small blue cable is suppose to be the limit to the control unit from an expansion module.

We are trying not the have to upgrade the system and add an SCN just to add another Expansion Module to a system several feet away that is working just fine.

Is there a signal booster that can be used like something that would be used as a POE injector type solution to boot or push the DS signal farther?

Has anyone tried to test the distance limit of an Expansion Module from the control unit?

Thanks!

I don't remember the exact distance but digital sets will go a long way I have used them blocks away in industrial applications. There is no signal booster I am aware of and anything but the supplied interconnect cable will be problematic at best.

You are correct in that you cannot extend the DS30 beyond the length of the supplied cable. By the way, that's not a typical patch cord, this cord has extra sheilding, as you'll note from the metal wrap around the RJ45 connector.

You mentioned this is to extend a DIGITAL set about 200 feet away. Digital sets don't have the loop restrictions of IP sets.

From Tek-Tips back in July 2006:

The first distance is on 22 gauge cable, then 24, then 26.

AWG22
(0.65mm)
AWG24
(0.5mm)
AWG26
(0.4mm)

2400/5400 Series
1200m/3937'.
1000m/3280'.
670m/2200'.

I suggest these same limitations apply to the current 95xx series sets as well.

Just run standard multi core cable between buildings as you would for any Pots phone.
Terminate on Patch panel each end .Main cab and remote Cab.
Then use patch cords from the Expansion Module to connect phones at each end

Thank you all.

I play around with low voltage devices from time to time and I am curious from a technical standpoint does anyone know what prevents a DS signal from being boosted further to a remote DS Expansion Module?

Corruption of data, raises any noise level along with the data. You could probably test it in a lab situation. Obviously not supported.

Like I said. I don't recall the exact limit but I think is about one mile or 5000 feet for digital sets. I do know analog sets at that distance requires a ring booster. And again. Anything but the 1 meter cable for module connections is a bad idea. They do make a 2 meter cable for use with the four port expansion card. You can always FOFO if you want... But it is a bad idea. This is just coming from someone with 20 years experience with the IPO. I do know a standard patch cable causes problems at one meter for expansion modules.

I personally tried many years ago, maximum distance I obtained from a Digital30 module was 20 meters, it's a limit of the 2 Mbits connection (64k x 32), in public ISDN for lo distance connection they use thin coax up to the end user cabinet.

I'll play around with it and let everyone know.

I would assume that an ethernet signal booster will not work for this type of signal?

No, although it has an RJ45 socket it is not Ethernet.

Nope, it's a simple PCM 2 MBit link (30x64kbit for media, 128Kbit for sync e signalling), no ethernet at all

NO.

In the almost 30-years it has been in use, no one has ever come up with a reliable method of boosting the signal other than try it with the best quality cable you can find and crossing your fingers. The example of 20-meters is pretty impressive and the best I've heard.
