Using Pagemaker 6.5, can't export into pdf. Window appears which says that distiller has not created pdf, and to check log. Log message doesn't mention any error. Distiller 3.01

Best way to create PDF's

Concensus is to avoid the PM "export to PDF" feature. I use it frequently with little problem. Many have never been able to successfully use it. It seems to work well with smaller documents. To avoid problems, the best way to create a PDF is the 2-step process, which may seem like more work, but can actually be faster if you are distilling multiple documents.

Through the print dialogue, select a Postscript printer and the appropriate PPD. Best choice is usually Acrobat Distiller PPD. Under the Options tab, check the "Write postscript to file" option. You can select the folder using the browse button there. After hitting "Save" (which is normally the print button), you will be printing the document to disk.

Now open Acrobat Distiller. Set the "job options" according to the intended end use of document (screen, print, pre-press). Select Embed all fonts, deselect the subset option. Open document, then save it. This procedure, according to some of the gurus from the forum, produces smaller and better PDF files than using the "export" option. It is certainly the most stable, error free procedure. When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.

I can't explain why it works that way.. just experience has shown me this work around for when EXPORT does crap out. I know many PM users even more experienced than I that agree.

Have you tried PDF995 available as afree d/l at It works better than PM's "export" does for me.

BTW, the link did not work for me.

There can be many resons why it did not create a PDF, including corrupted font or graphics. Check the fonts in the doc that is not working and see if that is the case. Go to utilities, save for service provider and do a preflight, that will check your graphics and fonts.

Hope I have been of help. When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.

Hi Folks,

I´ve heard very often in certain forums that many users have problems using the "Export Adobe *.PDF" function.
What I figured out are the following topics:
1. The problem always appears with certain windows-fonts like "Webdings" and "Wingdings (n)" fonts.
2. If the error occurs you can visualize the error by using the ghostscript-viewer "GSVIEW" from Russell Lang (rjl @ aladdin.com) which comes up with the message "Unrecoverable error: invalidexit in .stop"
3. According to the 912-page manual of the "PostScript Language Reference, 3rd edition" the corresponding text to this error message is:
invalidexit (error) ->
An EXIT operator has been executed for which there is no dynamically enclosing looping context (for example, FOR, LOOP, REPEAT, or PATHFORALL), or it has attempted to leave the context of a RUN or STOPPED operator.
4. As soon as you find in the postscript-file entries like,
%%BeginResource: font MSTT31907b7642O09406402
instead of correct entries like,
%%DocumentNeededResources: font Times-Roman
something went horribly wrong.

Does "MSTT" stand for "Macro-Soft-True-Type-fonts"?

Unfortunately I´m not in the position to determine who made what wrong but either Adobe made a mistake when converting a PageMaker-file into PostScript or certain Windows-fonts are terribly wrong and will not be recognized by PageMaker correctly!
What ever the heck is going on there, either you live with it or you have to use the work-arounds to get rid of this misbehavior ..., with all advantages and disadvantages.

If there is a PostScript guru out there, maybe he (or she) finds out what went wrong.

Viol8ion,

thanks for the reply. My link is here OK.
Perhaps you believe me without the link, that I don´t have
any problems with direct Export to PDF.
The reason may be:
Only reliable sources: txt, tiff, bmp, eps, pdf.
Never doc or wmf from clipboard or other WindowBill sources.
Only reliable fonts (once tested is normally OK).

And a funny observation: be careful with blue text.
Perhaps this is repaired in newer Distiller versions
(I use still an older version, everything with PM6.52).

Some people say, that the workflow 1.Make PS, 2. Distill
creates smaller files. I don´t belive this, because the file
size is mainly determined by images. Compression modes
are probably not diffferent.

zefir,

Using WMF, OLE, GIFs, JPGs will definately cause problems inthe distil. Some epople have no problem with either method, others report all sorts of problems. You are 100% correct that reliable sources are critical. Include in that list reliable fonts. And also include not "including" the placed graphics in the file. And I noticed that it will choke on documents that are 100 pages long, too.

The file size argument is debatable. Using the save as .ps > distil method one does have more control over the options including many choices in the type of compression of each type of graphic. Some people like less choices and only want to press a button and have it done. The difference is probably negligible.

The main thing is that if your method works for you, then there is certainly no need to change it. Ideally we would have explanations and fixes for these problems, but since we probably never will considering all the variables involved, having a workable alternative it next best.

Hey, here is a puzzle. Yours is the second link from this forum that I could not access. I click on the links in this forum and get a "page cannot be displayed" error. If I just copy the link & paste into another browser window the site opens. Very strange....

Its been a pleasure. When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.
