Hi,

I have Pagemaker 7.0, Acorabat Reader & Distiller 5.0 and also 3.0

When I export to PDF some images are being cropped ie: half of them is not visible in the finished pdf.

Please check it out on
Thanks

What format was that heading in before placing it in PM?

Re using underlining.

Real desktop publishers DO NOT use underlining. Make the subheadings a larger font, a different font or anything else but underlining to make it stand out.

It was in GIF.

Thanks for suggesting NOT to use underlining. It`s the first time I`m doing something like this and I really appreciate such suggestions!

Thanks

OK - if it was a GIF, in what program did you make it? Can you save the heading in another format? The best graphic formats for PM are TIF for raster images and EPS for vector images. Note however, that the EPS images will not print well on a non-postscript printer, so they should also be saved as a TIF. GIFs are a format suitable for the web, not for printed material.

But since the troublesome graphic is just text, why not create it directly in PM? Or is the shadowing important?

The little note out to the bottom right - there's something wrong with the grammar. I think the word 'where' needs to be removed.

And wow! you're advocating a TWO YEAR engagement? How many people wait that long? A little unrealistic? Maybe one year. I know I certainly wouldn't be buying my wedding dress a whole year before the wedding!!

Hi, Lyn,

> > I certainly wouldn't be buying my wedding dress a whole year before the wedding!!

Havng two ex-wives, I wouldn't even be getting married!

Hi, sciclunam,

You need consistency in your language - honour, color? Are you Canadian/Aussie/British or US?

Lyn's correct - either type in "Two Year Plan" or use images in TIFF or EPS format.

Hi,
First of all excuse my language. I`m Maltese.

I have noticed that images were being cropped if I inserted them by clicking on EDIT...INSERT OBJECT. If I use <CNTRL> D they came OK!

DOn`t know the difference! Also then I am promted whether to inset a copy of the image or not. I choose 'NO'. Is this the way to do it. The problem is with images (TIF) which need to have transparent background!

Also how shall I insert an Excel Spreadsheet as even these were being cropped.

Someone told me I have to convert spreadsheet to PDF first. But this, I think requires a particular plugin. Any luck with spreadsheets?

I have uploaded a better (I think) version of the file? What do you think?
New: Old:
Re Weddings: In Malta it is the norm to start booking wedding services two years in advance. Some did not manage to find what they wanted even 2 years in advance. Most of the time the problem is what the venues. We have very small amount of venues compared to the amount of weddings we have although lately we are having fewer weddings and the trend is more shifting towards co-living if you know what I mean!

And speaking of Bridal Gown...Suppliers over here take over 6 months to import dresses! They rarely stock!

Thanks all for your contribution.

That explains the advance planning advocated in your publication!

OK - back to getting images into PM. DO NOT use Insert>Object. DO NOT use Control D. Use File>Place. Preferably do not embed the image (i.e. do not store in publication) but link to it instead. However, for very small images such as your heading, it's probably OK. TIFs can have a transparent backgtpund if you create a clipping path of the image in Photoshop. Do you have Photoshop? Do you know how to make a clipping path?

Re the Excel charts. If you have Pagemaker you will also have Distiller, which is the engine needed to convert PM docs to PDFs (which is the correct way of placing an Excel chart).

To use Distiller, you will need to have it installed - check on your list of printers under Start>Settings>Printers to see if it is there. Then I am going to point you to John's magnificent article on creating PDFs. and another excellent article from Adobe on the correct workflow for using PM.
I have had a look at your new one. I like the font you used in the old heading much better - why not use that directly in PM? Take out the cheesy clipart at the top left. Remove the word 'where' from the note about the rings. Do you agree it looks much cleaner without the underlines under the subheadings?

Ummm - I meant the clipart at the top right.

Thank you again for your time.

1. <Cntrl> D is the same as File...Place. I am using links.

2. Yes I did a clipping part using PhotoShop`s Wizard to create file with transparent images. It worked fine with EPS but not with Tiff

3. I am using distiller. The only way I managed to insert an excel spreadsheet was by using Paste Special.

Re title: I preferred the shadow version which cannot be done directly in PM, if I am not mistaken!

Didn`t you like the cliparts? The handbook I am designing will be printed and handed out at a weddings fair we will soon have in Malta. I thought cliparts will ease the 'heavy' information there is in the handbook!

Regards

Mario

1. I'm not too good with keyboard shortcuts.

2. Clipping paths should work just as well with TIFs as with EPS. I wonder why yours didn't? I am not familiar with using wizards. How does the wizard do a clipping path? Which version of photoshop?

3. Using Paste Special can play havoc with making PDFs. It is still better to make the PDF from Excel (by 'printing' to Distiller) then place that in PM. It is no longer editable, but behaves more predictably.

4. No, you cannot add the shadowing in PM. Why does it need to have a transparent background? Are you printing on other than white paper?

5. Clipart can be OK, but find something more relevant to weddings.

2. Photoshop 6. The Wizard is under the Help Menu.
It creats a path around the image and prompts to save it in all formats. Tiff didnot work. ie: white background was still here. I read in this forum that you have to slightly rotate the image to actually see that it is transparent. With Eps`s this worked bit again not with tiff.

3. I did not know I can print for excel to ditiller to create a pdf! thanks.

4. Paper is white but i have added a slightly textured background so it`s import to have transparent background images. Even where one might have 2 overlapping images, transparency is crucial there.

Thanks

Mario

>>Re: The Wizard is under the Help Menu. It creats a path around the image and prompts to save it in all formats. Tiff did not work. ie: white background was still here<<.

Try this: click on the white background with the magic wand. This will select the background. Now INVERT the selection. This will select the image you want. Then go to the Paths palette (make sure the path is still selected) and click on the arrow at the top right. This will bring up a drop down menu from which you choose 'Male Work Path'. Double click it to save the path. You can choose the default name 'Path 1'. Finally, go to the top right arrow again and choose 'Clipping Path', making sure that the drop down box has 'Path 1' selected. Now you should be able to bring that TIF into PM with a transparent background.

>>Re: I read in this forum that you have to slightly rotate the image to actually see that it is transparent. With Eps`s this worked bit again not with tiff.<<

Doesn't work with TIFs - doesn't need to as the TIF will show up with a transparent background if you create the clipping path correctly.

Let's know how you go with this.

I shall try it. Thank you once again for all your help.

Dear Eggles,

Clipping paths worked great. Thanks.

One other thing:
Can PageMaker 6.5 PLACE PDF files in a publication. I mean I exported my excel sheets to pdf (using print to distiller like you told me) and have placed then using Pagemaker 7.0 without any problem.

Now I`m using Pagemaker 6.5 and when I choose the pdf file to be placed I am being prompted:

"Do not know how to place file TABLE.pdf" and a whole list of file types is shown for me to choose one. However no Pdf File type is listed.

Is this only possible in Version 7.0?

Thanks

Mario

Hi, sciclunam,

PM6.5 PDF import filter accepts PDF ver 1.3 or earlier
PM7 import filter accepts PDF ver 1.5 or earlier

I have a collection of clipart from Coreldraw. There's lots of wedding ones and I have made a PDF of a collection of scaled-down versions of the best ones for you to have a look at (see link below). The PDF is quite a big file (543 KB) but if there are any of these you would like to use, I am happy to email them to you. They are in colour, but if you would prefer them as greyscale I can convert them for you, which will reduce their size. The colour ones vary in size between 351 KB to 980 KB. I can supply each clipart image as an EPS so you can scale them to whatever size you would like. Alternatively, if you want to give me the final size, I can convert them to a TIF if they won't be printed on a posctscript printer.

Could someone tell me how she uploaded that file to the web in the first place? I use PM 7 but have never had luck with Distiller so use Broadgun's PDFMachine. However, I don't know how to upload it to the net so one can access it. [neutral]

Thanx,

To upload graphics to the web such as I have done above (although I think I have removed it now) you need to get yourself some webspace. If you just want a place to store images, there are a number of free places. I use boomspeed, but am not sure if that is still free. I have 1000 KB storage space for images, and when I get near my limit, I just delete old ones. I only use it for linking to images from a discussion forums such as this one. Try googling for some free web space. Your ISP may even offer 10-20 MB free website.

>>I use PM 7 but have never had luck with Distiller so use Broadgun's PDFMachine.<<

Now this is appalling. Never had any luck with Distiller??? Go back to the link I provided in my thread of October 7, read through it, try it out and then come back and tell us where you are having a problem. You really need to get the hang of making PDFs with Distiller, as it makes BY FAR THE BEST PDFs.

Once you have made a PDF for display on the web (and you will need to use the Distiller settings that maximise image compression and therefore minimise file size) AND you have found yourself some free web space then you upload the image. Sometimes you will need to use an FTP program (the usual way for uploading actual websites) or if you choose one specifically for image storage, it may have a built-in transfer program, where all you have to do is browse to the file on your HD that you want to upload, and press a button marked 'Upload' and once it's there, just note it's URL. This is what is provided in the link in between HTML tags.

There's a lot of things to think about in this post. So get cracking - do some reading, make a PDF with Distiller, find yourself some webspace and upload an image for us.

Hi Eggles,

Thanks for your help. I would love to see the cliparts but your link is unavailable!

Re spreadsheets being cropped I had to set Pm to insert place the actual image not a link, in order for them not to be cropped.

In mycase, trnsparent backgrounds only worked with EPS format and sometimes had to rotate the image slightly in order to have the background transparent. TIFF still gave ma a white background, even with a clipping path.

Anyway, the booklet I was designing is ready now and I am eagerly waiting for its delivery from the printing press...it should be delivered today!!!

Whilst thanking you for your help and suggestions, should you have some time, I would appreciate should you let me know regarding the clipart link.

Best regards,

Mario
