Hello,
I am looking for a good way to export Crystal Reports to Excel through CE.
I know there is the export feature on the viewer, but once my reports are exported they are horribly fomatted in Excel; cells are automatically merged, etc. I don't want to have to reformat all of my reports just so they will export perfectly, does anyone have any suggestions?

Unfortunately export isn't a perfect science, but there are steps you can take to improve the export, such as applying the latest hot fixes, testing the export as you go along, making sure that fields don't overlap, that they're aligned the same, etc.

Another thought is to export to a CSV format, which Excel can open.

There are numerous knowledge base articles on crystaldecisions.com that address individual formatting concerns.

I have even created two versions of the report, one for export, and one for display, which were based on a parameter and used suppression so that the report formatted differently when used for export.

I ran into this same problem and have a solution.
Note: I use CR 8.5 and CE 8.5

In design view be sure you have 'Show Guidelines in Design' turned on.

If you have several guidelines out of place, you can get rid of them by clicking the arrow type thing at the top of the page and dragging it off from the report or you can use exsisting ones and drag them where you want.

Next attach a horizontal guideline (ruler) to each object on the left and the right side. This will allow Excel to decipher the columns. Do not leave any gaps between objects (the header and detail fields must be snapped to a guideline except for the main heading).

I also use 'Fit to section' to avoid blank rows in Excel.


Trick: In design view; select your object and use the left arrow key to slide it over past the gridline then back to the grid to snap it in place. Note: You will see red in the corners when it is snapped.

Next, insert another gridline to the right of the object and increase the size of your 1st field and drop it on the guidline. The right hand side should now be red. Use the step above to attach the next object to the 1st object's gridline, etc.
