Hi guys,
I was notified this morning that one of my master servers in a remote office had a major hardware failure and was being moved to a new server. The old server named NT2 was running 5.1. An attempt was made to upgrade the server to 6.0 around the same time of the hardware failure. The new server (FS) will be the new master server and has a functional, but blank, version of NB6.5. Since I can’t run the console for NB6 on the old server I can’t export the catalog and I doubt any version of the catalog “backup” is version 6 compatible. I do have access to the file system and have managed to bring the console up on the old NB server but it states that NB is unable to determine the Enterprise Media Manager server or the port when I try to do anything with the catalog. Also, there aren’t any Media servers in remote sites.

I could recall the backup media for this server and rebuild it to 5.1, then uninstall 6 on the new server and build it as a 5.1 box. Then upgrade, but in the amount of time that would take I could probably just rebuild the server from scratch and import media on an as needed basis. Just more difficult to do restores with an empty catalog.

So rather than troubleshoot the issue on the server being decommissioned I would like to know if anybody knows of a way to export the policies from the old server (NT2) and import them to the new master server (FS) without having a backup of the catalog?

If you just want the policies then simply recreate them

Well, actually I would like to have the catalog, policies, etc. but don't see that as an option. If there is a way to export a policy and import it onto another server that would be great. Being as though I have 18 Master servers in my backup infrastructure, it would be nice to create one policy and a set of schedules and copy it across the Enterprise.

I will just rebuild from scratch today I guess.

My environment is Windows-based. You can simply copy the Policy folders from one master to another. In fact, I have been able to copy 5.1 policies to a 6.0 server and have them work. As for the catalog, that's a different story. If you need to have a catalog migrated, I would not suggest moving the policies in this fashion, and I think professional services might be required.

Watch out when copying policies - remember storage unit names may differ from server to server, so some modification may be required within the policy itself
