Everyone once in awhile explorer.exe begins to suddenly eat up 140,000K or more Mem Usage and holds my CPU usage steady at about 90% or higher successfully bogging down my system greatly.

I have seen this in the past on my old machine and also I've seen it a friend's house on his machine...he started freaking out about it...we haven't been able to figure it out.

The past couple days it seems to be happening more to me. In fact...for the first time ever...it happened to BOTH my machines at the same time! I've got 2 machines on a linksys router. One started acting up...so I got on the other right quick to post some forum messages...and sure enough it was doing it to! Had to log off both machines and back on. Which does fix it...but it's happened to this single machine again today and is VERY AGGRIVATING!

Anyone have any idea what would be causing this? Any information you could give would be greatly apprecaited.

Thanks!

There is mounting evidence that corrupt AVI files can cause this type of problem. This explains it better and offers a possible fix.

Ok...I've found out that it's happening when I browse one certain directory. It's strange though...I happens on this machine when I browse the directory...and it happens on the machine right next to me when I browse the directory...but not on the 3rd machine on the network. That machine works just fine. All machines have SP1 and are updated on a regular basis.

Virus? AV is finding nothing. And it hasn't spread to the 3rd machine for some reason if it is a virus...and if it's a virus...it's ONLY on that one directory.

Anybody have any idea what might be going on with this? Any information would be great! Thanks!

linney: sorry man I hadn't even checked for a reply before i already listed my add-on. Thanks a lot for the information.

I think the corrupted AVI thing is problem and I think I've figured out even which AVI is causing it...however I CANNOT get it deleted for the life of me. It's constantly thinking it's in use. (which i see quite a bit in XP...even dealing with files other than AVI...but that's for another listing...)

Anyway...any information on how I can get this damn file deleted would be awsome. Thanks!

OK I GOT IT! Sure enough it was a bad AVI. I got rid of it with Nortons data shredder thing...no more problems!

Very glad I got that one figured out...Linney...than's for the links!
