Greetings, ...when i go to shutdown, windows does its thing, and normally, the computer shuts off... but often
there is a dialogue box about ending the task (explorer.exe) the progress bar goes but nothing happens unless i press end now, then windows shuts down and the computer stops... Why???
curious and thanx in advance. casaraku.

It may be an indication of something else is also running.
Before shutdown, check which processes are active. Maybe it is an idea to run Adaware or a similar program.

I too have been having the exact same program for about the last two months. I have searched the web for information and have not found anything. I've done a virus scan, defrag, clean disk and have run Ad Aware but all were successful or found nothing.

I also found a utility from called Process Explorer which lists all the processes and applications that are currently running. This program tells me that csrss.exe, lsass.exe, svchost.exe are all running and are the only processes/applications currently using explorer.exe in some capacity and of course, explorer.exe is running. I'm going to shutdown and see if I get the message.

I realize that this reply is more of a narrative but am hoping it may inspire some more ideas from someone.

Hi Wendy,

"Uninstalling Q329170 worked for me."

I'm glad that solved the problem....

My Win 2000 PC has the same symptoms - only happens maybe 1 shutdown out of 10.

How or what is involved in Uninstalling Q329170 ?

Thanks for your time. John

John,

If you go into Add/Remove Programs (in the Control Panel) you should see "Windows 2000 Hotfix (Pre-SP4) Q329170" in the list of programs. Just click on it and press the Change/Remove button.

Hope it helps.
Wendy

Yes i had this same problem, where it took forever to shut down windows, uninstally Q329170 solved it. Now it shuts down in less than 2 seconds. You don't really need Q329170 unless you are a corporation from what i remember reading about it.
