Explorer.exe is broken

explorer.exe is running in Task Mgr, but if I right-click Start and select Explore I get a critical error. The desktop flashes -- doesn't go away, just flashes. So if I need to explore I have to go through My COmputer. Before I reinstall I thought I'd ask if anyone has seen this and knows how to fix it. I have no viruses, spyware/adware, and have run Norton Disk Doctor. I have also checked all hardware, and it is AOK.

I would install XP SP2, should replace the explorer.exe, may help you out

Check the event viewer before system and application errors, what errors do you have there?

If you get no joy from the above try using the system file checker.

Click on Start > Click Run > type sfc /scannow > Click OK

You may need your windows disc for this to complete.
