Hi everyone,

I'm usually pretty good at troubleshooting computers but this one I've tried everything I could I think...I don't have much info on the computer as it's a neighbor's PC.

He brought it with Windows 98 not starting at all with explorer crashing
EXPLORER.EXE has caused an invalid page fault in module shell32.dll.

I've fixed that by removing the appropriate keys in the registry (Streams, streamMRU) common error for windows 98.

Now I got it to boot, but I can't do much because the damn IE is integrated into everything (MS should burn in hell for that)

Whenever I try to open a folder, open control panel, IE and other things related tightly/loosely to IE I get
EXPLORER.EXE has caused an invalid page fault in module kernel32.dll at 0167:bff7al38.

If it's IE itself I get the error + the error report prompt and the option to restart IE which lead to a series of prompts since it cant open.

Ok, that's pretty much the problem now here's what I've tried.

-I've tried clearing the auto complete of IE (no clue how it's related to my problem but MS said to do it...)

-I've deleted the *.pwl files

-I've restored IE default settings.

Now I know what I would want to do next, I would want to repair IE, but to do that I need to go in add/remove which I can't get to (from normal and safemode). Any ideas?

Ok, I was able to repair IE through MSinfo32-tools menu. That didn't do it.........

Sorry I keep posting to myself...just a little update on the situation so that any potential posters have the full info.

After doing a search I've seen that the CWS virus can cause this exact error. After inspection CWS isn't on the system.

I've tried restoring explorer.exe and kernel32.dll which didn't change anything.

JFRobishow:

I found this thread (again). I had the same problem some time ago and had forgotten how I resolved it. Another search using the error message brought-up a lot of links, many of which point back to nearly un-helpful M'Soft pages, but I did find this one, again. I think it was the key to solving my problem. You may want to make a registry back-up before messing with it (you are probably already aware of this, but someone else reading here might not remember to do so and will have another "religious" experience!).

Best of luck.
