I am running Windows XP Pro SP2.

I have a D-Link Modem/Router which is working OK between my Desktop and Laptop computers.

When the Desktop boots the Network monitor (2 TV icons) show in the notification area and then the Internet monitor (2 TV icons) show in the notification area.
This was working OK until about 2 weeks ago, now only sometimes does the Internet monitor show.

If I select Task Manager/Processes then Explorer.exe, End Process then File New Task Explorer.exe, the Internet monitor appears.

I would appreciate some advise as to why the Internet monitor does not show after booting and why I have to shutdown and restart Explorer.exe.

I have scanned for Viruses, Spyware, Adware, Malware and used System File Checker but the problem is still happening.

You are prompted to insert a Windows XP SP2 CD when you try to run the System File Checker tool on a Windows XP SP2-based computer

You may be prompted to insert a Windows XP Professional CD when you run the System File Checker tool in Windows XP Home Edition

Change the souce file path

Scannow SFC

This might be completely wrong, but see if using double "\\" (backward rather than the described as "forward" as mentioned below) in the file path in your batch file. eg.

"SourcePath"="C:\\"
"ServicePackSourcePath"="C:\\"
"ServicePackCachePath"="C:\\windows\\ServicePackFiles\\ServicePackCache"

Learn a little more about your Registry!

"The observant amongst you may have noticed file and folder pathnames in the data values use double-forward-slashes ("\\") rather than the normal single-forward-slash ("\"). This is simply because the single forward-slash is a special "tag" character, used to clarify the character that follows it. In other words, the two characters are treated as a single character. For example, "\t" translates as a tab character, while "\n" translates as a carriage-return/line-feed. Since the forward-slash is a special character, it can't be used in registry pathnames. However, a double-forward-slash clarifies that the second forward-slash is a genuine forward-slash. The first is therefore ignored. If you look in the registry you'll see the double-slashes are correctly shown as single-slashes."

linney.
I tried all the remedies for SFC but none of them worked.
What I finally did was downloaded SP2 to my Desktop and ran it from there, now can run SFC without any CD in the drive, I left the registry settings modified as stated previously.
As the System Files would all be new, I did not expect any changes to be made.
The only issue I have now is “Unclean Shutdown” appearing on shutdown but the Icon and Explorer.exe are not giving problems.

I did have some concerns that I should have burnt a CD and put SP2 on it, as I am not sure what will happen in the future if any System Files are changed or corrupted.

Now it is a waiting game to see what happens
