I ran out of ideas, so hopefully someone might have run into this problem. Windows 2000 Professional computer was having issues -- whenever you would click on My Computer, OR Internet Explorer it would give the error message "explorer.exe has generated error messages..." and the same error message with IE (with the exception of explorer.exe replaced with iexplore.exe). Did a virus scan, installed service packs, tried installing ie 6... Here is the kicker, if I start-run-c:\winnt\explorer.exe I can click on My Computer all day long with no errors. (Obviously when the computer is rebooted My Computer starts to have a problem again.) Internet Explorer still causes errors - but, I'm looking to take one issue at a time! :)

hey jcwilson,
I copped this problem about the same time as you, i looked around the web, and the general concensus was that something had been installed that didn't like been with iexplorer. the last thing installed was msn messenger, and when i went to uninstall it via control panel, hey presto, got the same error.
booted in safe mode, i could use explorer at this time, tried removing msn messenger via control panel and it seemed to work, but still get the same problem after reloading. me thinks its re-install w2k time :(

You may find some help on the MS site, looking at KB article 303728 -
The path is
I am having the same problem with a user on my network, and am sure it is a piece of sh*t spyware or adware program. Ad-Aware has not been able to fix the problem, though. BTW, I can log on to his machine using my own profile and everything works fine. It is a problem within his application settings having to do with (I believe) the explorer toolbars that are shared between IE and Explorer.

My two cents

Not sure how to link but there is a a very good post on this forum about this same error. It helped me fix my problem.

Here is the post number if this helps. 616-175431

My problem was with a program called WS_FTP. If you have this program installed deleted the WS_FTP explorer icon from the desktop and problem will be fixed.

does anyone get the same error message for iexplorer.exe??
i have been ahvgin this problem on my computer for some time. it seems to occur when i try responding to internet email on my yahoo account. (does not occur with other web based mail servers tho. hmmm?)
