Hello,

I am getting an error message on start up on a friends PC that I've been trying to fix. The message is "Explorer.exe has caused an error, please reinstall windows".

However I can't seem to get into DOS, and as I side stepped ME and went from 98 to XP, It's a bit of a head scratcher. Ideally I'd like to install windows 98 and chuck ME out the window.

Can anyone give me a steer in the right direction.

Cheers,

Steve.

Make things as simple as possible — but no simpler. [pc3]

Should be able to access this way Dending on the computer. If you have the system recover disks, insert it in the drive. When the window pops up hit cancel to cancel the recovery process. This will throw you into the Dos Window. I myself am thinking of trashing ME.

Sounds like the System Registry is corrupted or some critical VXD files are missing. A strong possibility is there might be a virus present.

Several questions:
- Did ME get installed as an UPGRADE or Full Version.
You should be able to boot with the Full Version, but
you have to setup the BIOS to boot from CDROM first.

- Do you have a ME 98 Startup Diskette?
You should be able to boot from a startup diskette, and
you might be able to restore the registry.

- Do you have a Windows 98 OEM CD?
You should be able to boot by setting your BIOS to boot
from CDROM first. However, if you install W98, you will
need to reinstall all your user applications.

- Has the computer been running OK until now and do you
want to keep your user files intact? Then your only
choice is to find a ME Startup Diskette and boot from it
with CDROOM support, then run SETUP.

- In case of a virus, obtain a Virus program such as McAfee or Norton and run the stand-alone program from the CD.
