Explorer Crashes 4

Upon open XP and trying to access Internet explorer or explore explorer for files etc my system advises me exploer has crashed and I get following message
C/DOCUME~1\ROSS\LOCAUS~1\Temp\WER5.tmp.dir00\appcompat.txt

I've tried to reinstall explorer but continue with same message.
I have 5 users on computer. 4 get same message (with their name) one opens find (hence why i can do this now).

Any suggestions appreciated

The first place to look might be for a virus. Try here:

Delete all the files in the Temporary Internet Files cache and Downloaded Program Files folders.
You quite possibly have some corruption there.
Tried deleting the profiles and recreating them?
Don't ignore Event Viewer...there may be clues there.

anything special in event viewer you suggest I look for?

Anti virus scan (nortons) done with no results... all virus updates already done

Look for anything in the Application or System Logs with a Red highlighting...copy the error message (if there is one) by hitting the document button that'll copy the message to the clipboard and then paste it into a Notepad or other document and bring it back here.

No viruses? (not discounting smah's suggestion by any means: this guy is good)

This same message received when I tried to open windows explorer next morning
This same message is shown constantly. Probably from me trying to open explorer

There remains further red event’s such as
Event viewer for system
The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
ASPI32
This meeagse has been show 3 or 4 times today
As I’m administrator for computer and I can’t open windows or internet explorer so I can’t get to control panels to view my own event viewer or change any setting or profiles (users).

As stated earlier I’m using the only user on system not affected by the explorer issue.

All other programs operating normally
I conducted clean sweep of cache… no change to explorer
I ran win doctor and repaired all problems existing.. still no change to explorer
My kids had been last users previous evening they said they had only used ms messenger

That file is not on my system and a cursory search at groups.google.com confirms what I suspect.

Think/hope this will cure your problems.

By the way, this spyware is associated with P2P programs...(translate kazaa, or other exchange methods) and with the failure of advertising on the web marketers are resorting to seemingly criminal methods of hijacking browsers and home pages...and even more underhanded things like you're enduring.
Run spybot on a regular basis to get around these b_____ds.

The usual afterthought makes me realize you need to go to Internet Explorer/Options/Advanced and uncheck the Enable 3rd party browser extensions, too, to help head these things off at the pass.
Tracking it down with groups.google one of the posts even listed the offending website flashtrack.com...like that's somewhere I want to go!

A repair of Internet Explorer may be in order. Start by running sfc /scannow. If that doesn't help, follow the remainder if this KB article

The ASPI32 error may or may not be related. Several cd burner programs use ASPI32 (or similarly named) dll files. If you search for it and it's an .exe instead of a .dll or you don't have a cd burner, then gargouille's info definately applies. But is is possible that it's a legitimate file.

One more bit of info that may help you - hopefully, you can still log on and use 'Administrator' account. In XP Pro, at the welcome screen, press Ctrl-Alt-Del twice and enter Administrator for the user. In XP home, boot into safe mode by pressing F8 at boot and choose Administrator from the Welcome screen.

You could also try System Restore to get back to before this started happening. How far back do these errors go in event viewer?

Firstly thanks for everyones attention to this problem your guys been great.
Update.

(1) downloaded and ran spybot and it informed me all ok. - explorer still a no go.
(2) tried start/run/and sfc/scannow. system replied could not run this... think it said couldn't find it.
(3) My kids do have kazza P2P on board. Not used it myself but note it loads up when I start windows. I usually quit it.
(4) Tried system restore earlier today and was told was resorted ok... It didn't help.

Starting to think only option may be to edit registry or
reinstall xp pro altogether

Any better suggestions gratefully considered

I'd try linney's suggestions before I did that.
I thought spybot would get it, but I see I was wrong...but the links that linney gave lead down that same path...with different things to try.

Use Sfc /Scannow with the space between sfc and /Scannow.

Well after unsuccessfully running scannow ( i got it to work this time thanks linney) then reinstalling XP and still finding same problem exist's I went over everyones suggestings.

You will be please to know that deleting folder flt was the answer. delete that and all worked perfectly. Yes linney I know you said it earlier but frankly it looked to easy... doh.

Again thanks for assistance all contributions have been great and worthwhile suggestions.

I believe over a year ago similar event and then a full clean and reinstall was all we came up with... todays result was far better.

greetings all:
after downloading and installing yet another critical security update.i now am having the same problem with both windows explorer,and ie explorer.acording to the event viewer and a program i used called disk detective,the faulted module (Application Failure iexplore.exe 6.0.2600.0 in flt.dll 1.0.0.1 at offset 000038b5) is located in c:\programfiles\flt
there is more than 1 file in this folder and 1 executable file,which is a graphics setup prog,ive never used or installed.and which i wont mind losing.i have no idea how that ended up there.
My question is?:is it as easy as deleting this folder to repair this problem.or do i need to use safe mode and remove it that way?.
being this problem started with the winxp security update.i am not sure if this is just a fluke,and just happen to start at the same time as the update.
and i have already restored to an earlier date,that didnt help.
any positive input would be excellant!!

What options are available for removing it via Add and Remove Programs or any Uninstall Program in that particular folder?

Try the options outlined in the above posts, if it comes down to deleting files, back them up first. Try deleting in normal mode and see if it lets you do it.

This ofcourse depends on Explorer allowing you to access your machine and then that file and folder. Just post back if you encounter problems.

since i have discovered this flt.dll file,
ive done some research,it may be a parasite from flashtrak,or imesh which i dont have or use.
ive been using the dialog box from run from my taskbar.
sort of a back door for me to move and copy and delete files.
i will try to delete the file,and all thats in it ,after i back them up.while im in windows.
if that wont work ill try safe mode.then i shall see if i need to repost or not

removing the file by deleting it was the answer
im sure it was an flt/flashtrak parasite,that was causing both explorers to crash
everything is back to normal now
im back to exploring
