If the module is unknown the only way you can find out what is causing it is you're going to have to perform a clean boot of Windows 98. There is a TSR causing your problem. First to perform a clean boot check this article. You will have to work your way down each program rebooting and trying different things until you find the program causing this. Good luck and sorry I couldn't be more help. -Brad

Prior to IE 4 Windows handled the file management with Windows Explorer.

If the IE is later than version 4, file management is now handled by Internet Explorer.

When third party software is installed an amended version of Explorer.exe can overwrite the system file as part of the installation.

A reinstall of Internet Explorer could very well fix your problem. 99.9 percent of the time I've found it to be the fix.

Sorry dude i tried that one before. Thats not the problem that problem is similar and yet completely different. The error I come accross to dso with IE is an invalid page fault not what i described "General protectoin error".

Its before I can even open my computer or explorer. It happens at the very start. And are youj sure Ie handles the file managment??? I know it was intergrated with explorer when windows was released. But actually handling it? Dunno about that.

However could active desktops cause this sort of problem!

It's what I learned when studying for my MCSE + Internet. If it's not true...then they lied. :)

It makes perfect sense when you think about it. How else can you integrate internet browsing seamlessly into OS system if all browsing/file management isn't handled by the same engine?

Active desktop could certainly cause the problem, but I think that's not your answer if Windows isn't loading. Sounds like it could be hardware or damaged windows system files.

First, you'll have to narrow down the source of the error. Because General Protection faults can be caused by software or hardware, the first step is to restart your computer in Safe mode. Safe mode allows you to test your computer in a state with only the bare essential components of Windows loading.

If you restart your computer in Safe mode and the error message does not occur, its more likely to be a driver or program.

If you restart in Safe mode and then test your computer and the error message does occur, the issue is more likely to be hardware or damaged Windows core files.

If you have damaged Windows 98 core files you can reinstall Windows over the top of your current config, replacing only the system files and leaving all installed programs and data in place.

NOTE: If you have to reset (reinstall) the system files, make sure you specify your current windows directory when installing or you'll end up with two operating systems on your hd.

MS Article Q82710 :Causes of General Protection Faults and Troubleshooting Tips will step you through the troubleshooting process.

Hope it helps!!

OK Try not to copy directly from microsoft next time. Is that in the MCSE too? He he. Only kidding. My knowledge is that GPFs are caused by software or data. It can be data corrupt etc. Another thought I had apart form all my crazy thories is....is explorer having problems loading the .dll files in to the memory. Or unloading, depends. After more testng I discovered that the error does not always occour on boot up. It can sometimes occour when you close our e-mail program (Express IT!. Blimey thats crap). And other programs.

Would a system file restore from DOS sort this out????

That troubleshoot process is soooooo bloomin long and I get the feeling that it will sort out nothing. I tried a couple of these before!
