OK, I'm expecting some grief over this but this is what I did.

I had a Win2k Server all logged on and running perfectly. Then I installed Active Directory. When the server rebooted it came up and when I logged on I was told the password had expired and I had to change it. Basically, it had been logged on for so long that the password had expired.

Anyway, whenever I try to change it it tells me that either the username or the old password are incorrect , which is a bit odd because it fills in that information for you, from the information you use to log on!!!! This means that it won't let me log on or change the password so I can't get into the server and as I have only just installed the AD there aren't any other accounts.

Has anyone any ideas as to how I can change the password or unexpire the account?

Thanks

Nick

Weird problem maybe a bug...

trying using a context logon for the username mydomain.com/username

Try logging in locally and not on the domain. If you were the one to set up the server you must have had a local account with password. The same thing happened to me and I used the local account to get in.

Thanks for the swift input.

1)Not sure what you mean by 'repair'.

2)The context logon could be a good idea, I'll give it a go tomorrow (it's 11.15pm here in the UK), and post an update.

3)Once you update to AD you lose the local user accounts. Your only option is to log onto the domain.

I have a plan B just in case, as I have only just installed AD, there are no user accounts, so I won't lose much if I install a fresh Windows 2K in another directory and run that.

Thanks again for the response.

Nick

P.S. This is something that I need to sort out tomorrow, therefore, consider this thread dead after 16th Sep 2003

can you boot into restore mode, if so try dcpromo to demote server to a member server and then to another dcpromo to promote the server this way you can create another local admin account
