I am trying to install Paradox 7 on a Win98 system from the Corel Office Professional 7 CD. I am attempting a 'Typical' installation using all the default paths. After installing, Paradox cannot seem to find its files, or they are corrupted. Here are two examples:

(EXAMPLE 1) I create a blank form and attempt to add a button. The expert runs and crashes, opening a message window that says:

ErrorCode1: peQueryErr
ErrorMessage1: An error was triggered in the 'executeQBE' method on and object of Query type.

ErrorCode2: perInvalidFileName
ErrorMessage2: Invalid file name.
Table: EXPBTNS

(EXAMPLE 2) I try to open CUSTOMER.DB from the SAMPLE folder. I get the following error:

Unable to open table.
Invalid File Name.
File: C:\Program Files\Borland\Paradox\SAMPLE\ORDERS.DB

Note that it refers to the wrong file.

I did a test install from this CD on a Win95 machine and it ran fine. I also have Paradox 8 running on WinNT with no problems. Any solutions/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Okay, here's my solution to my problem: Do NOT use the default install directory. Instead, install it to a shorter pathname with DOS 8+3 character convention directory names. I used C:\PARADOX\ and it now works fine. Apparently the problem was caused by

1) too long of a path name (>32 chars?) to its files

and/or

2) directories using long (not 8+3) filenames.

Some of Corel's products still have bugs in this area (such as the merge source file in WordPerfect 8). Any further comments/thoughts welcome.

sgunno,

It like your Registry is either pointing to a different instllation of Paradox or that you have some setting left over from a previous install. Make sure the registry settings for each version of Paradox on your machine are correct. Carefully use REGEDIT for this.

Also, make sure you've got the latest patch for Paradox 7; there were many issues in that release. I believe you can get it at
Please note that this link is for the 32-bit version of Paradox 7. If you're using the 16-bit version, the parent document of that link contains another link for the single file that was patched.

Hope this helps...
